Frequently
Asked Questions

Clear answers about skin checks, appointments, results, treatments, fees, and the SkinGP clinic.

Before Your Appointment

  • No. You can book directly with SkinGP without a referral from your GP. Simply book online or call (03) 9969 5000.

  • Anyone. You do not need a specific concern, a family history, or a high-risk profile to have a skin check. A Full Skin Check is a proactive health measure for any adult who wants to understand the state of their skin.

  • Please do not wear makeup on the day of your appointment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Remove nail polish if possible. Let your hair out so your scalp can be examined. Bring your Medicare card and any concession card if applicable.

  • Contact our reception team to complete a Medical Records Authority form. Record transfers can take up to four weeks. We will guide you through the process - please do not delay booking your appointment while waiting for records.

  • If you have noticed a lesion that is growing rapidly or changing quickly, call us directly on (03) 9969 5000 to arrange an Urgent Lesion Review. Do not wait for an online booking - phone is the fastest option.

Your Skin Check

  • Your appointment has two stages. First, a nurse uses the FotoFinder ATBM system to capture Total Body Photography - a high-resolution baseline map of your entire skin surface. Then, one of our Accredited Skin Cancer Doctors examines your skin from head to toe using a digital dermatoscope. Any areas of concern are discussed with you during the appointment.

  • A Full Skin Check typically takes 30 to 40 minutes. An Urgent Lesion Review takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Yes. You will be asked to undress to your underwear for the Total Body Photography process. Genital areas are not routinely examined, but can be assessed if you request this. A gown or blanket is available.

  • A Dermatoscope is a specialised skin microscope that allows doctors to examine the structures beneath the skin's surface. This significantly enhances the ability to detect skin cancers at an early stage, reduces unnecessary biopsies, and supports more accurate clinical decision-making.

  • Yes, if possible. Nails are examined as part of a full skin check, as melanoma can develop under and around the nail. Nail polish prevents this assessment.

Results & Follow Up

  • Your doctor will discuss their findings with you at the end of your consultation. If a biopsy is taken, pathology results typically take a few days. You will be contacted with the results, and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled if required.

  • Your doctor will explain exactly what they have found, what it may mean, and what the recommended next step is. In many cases, this means scheduling a biopsy or a minor surgical procedure at SkinGP. If specialist care is required, your doctor will facilitate a referral with comprehensive documentation.

  • You will leave with a clear result and be added to our patient reminder system for your next recommended skin check. The interval between checks will depend on your individual risk profile.

  • For most adults with no specific risk factors, a Full Skin Check is recommended annually. If you have a history of skin cancer, a high number of moles, or other risk factors, your doctor may recommend checks every three to six months. Your doctor will advise you at the end of your consultation.

Treatments

  • SkinGP performs biopsies (partial and excision), surgical excisions, cryotherapy, PDT (Photodynamic Therapy), topical treatments (5-FU/Efudix and Imiquimod/Aldara), and photographic monitoring. Most procedures are performed under local anaesthetic at the clinic.

  • Yes, in most cases. Routine follow-up is part of the care pathway at SkinGP. Your doctor will discuss the schedule for post-procedure review, scar management, and any further surveillance required.

  • Where a referral is required, SkinGP provides the receiving specialist with detailed documentation, including biopsy results and high-quality photographic records. We aim to ensure continuity and minimal delay in your care pathway.

Fees & Medicare

  • The total out-of-pocket cost for a Full Skin Check is $208 for all patients. This includes Mole Mapping, Total Body Photography, and Dermoscopy Skin Check Consultation.

  • Yes. SkinGP is a private billing practice, but Medicare rebates apply to most consultations and are processed on-the-spot via Tyro EFTPOS. For current rebate amounts, refer to the Fees page or ask our reception team.

  • Yes. Concession card holders pay $0 for Spot Checks and Urgent Lesion Reviews (bulk billed). Concession fees also apply to procedures. Please advise reception when booking.

  • We accept EFTPOS and credit card payments via Tyro. Cash payments are not accepted.

The Clinic

  • No. SkinGP is a dedicated skin cancer clinic. General practice appointments are not available and our general practice books are closed. All clinical capacity is dedicated to skin cancer medicine, skin checks, and skin cancer procedures. For general practice care, please contact your regular GP.

  • An Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor is a medical practitioner who has completed advanced training and rigorous formal assessment in skin cancer medicine through the Skin Cancer College of Australasia (SCCA) - the only peak body in Australia and New Zealand that offers formal accreditation and fellowship in this field. This designation proves proficiency in accurately diagnosing and treating all types of skin cancer, across diagnostics, dermoscopy, and surgical techniques. Look for the Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor symbol - it confirms the doctor has met the highest clinical standards in this specialised field. SkinGP's Accredited Skin Cancer Doctors are the only ones in the Macedon Ranges.

  • AGPAL is Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited. AGPAL accreditation is an independent assessment that confirms SkinGP meets the highest standards in clinical practice, patient safety, and practice management. SkinGP holds AGPAL accreditation with policies recognised for excellence.
